INSTRUCTION FOR SPIRITUAL DECEPTION
The work shows snapshots from the development process of 35mm films with ‚manipulated‘ water in a darkroom based on the theory of the esoteric Masaru Emoto. This theory states that human consciousness can change the molecular structure of water. Emoto attracted international attention by publishing papers in which he photographed ‚influenced‘ water by water crystals in various (de)formations under a microscope. How the actual (de)formations occurred in camera is not known and is exemplary of the emergence and impact of esoteric theories, practices and products.
Shot with a game camera in a darkroom, the work makes use of a typical product of the prepper movement, whose overlaps with the esoteric market in terms of both personnel and content can be increasingly observed. The infrared light of the camera protects the light-sensitive developing process and triggers with a motion detector, the recordings of which are just as textually equalized as most popular esoteric and conspiracy-theory content.
Die Arbeit zeigt Momentaufnahmen aus den Entwicklungsprozess von 35-mm Filmen mit ‘manipulierten’ Wasser in einer Dunkelkam- mer auf der Basis der Theorie des Esoterikers Masaru Emoto. Diese besagt, dass das menschliche Bewusstsein die molekulare Struktur von Wasser verändern kann. Emoto erregte durch die Veröffentlichung von Publikationen internationale Aufmerksamkeit, in denen er ‘beeinflusstes’ Wasser durch Wasserkristalle in verschiedenen (De-)formierungen unter einem Mikroskop ablichtete. Wie es zu den tatsächlichen (De-)formierungen unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit gekommen ist, ist nicht bekannt und exemplarisch für die Entstehung und Wirkung esoterischer Theorien, Praktiken und Produkte.
Mit einer Wildkamera in einer Dunkelkammer aufgenommen, bedient sich die Arbeit eines szenetypischen Produktes der Prepper-Be- wegung, dessen personelle wie inhaltliche Überschneidungen zum Esoterikmarkt vermehrt zu beobachten sind. Das Infrarot-Licht der Kamera schützt den lichtempfindlichen Entwicklungsprozess und löst mit einem Bewegungsmelder aus, dessen Aufnahmen genauso kon- textentzerrt sind, wie die meisten populären esoterischen und verschwörungstheoretischen Inhalte.
